Purpose of the role

The Mine Manager oversees all aspects of mining operations, performs statutory functions in line with the Mine Health and Safety Act, maintains a safe and productive working environment, and ensures optimal performance of physical assets throughout their life cycles.

Requirements

• BTech, BSc or BEng degree in Mining Engineering.
• Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency.
• Management Development Programme or equivalent.
• Psychometric assessment and certificate of fitness.
• Engineering Council of South Africa registration as PrEng.
• SA Institute of Mining and Metallurgy membership is advantageous.
• 8 years' relevant mining and mining management experience in a coal mining or coal production environment.

Skills and competencies

• Full computer literacy and proficiency in MS Office Suite.
• Sound verbal and written communication skills in English.
• Broad knowledge of coal mining methods, opencast pit planning, underground mine planning, layout design and scheduling.
• Project management, stakeholder engagement, analytical, problem-solving, presentation and report-writing skills.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, manage and control mining operations to achieve optimum production.
• Manage business plans, budgets, costs, assets, production data and operational performance.
• Drive risk mitigation, statutory compliance, company policy compliance and SHE requirements.
• Lead stakeholder engagement with internal teams, service providers, Eskom, government departments and mining houses.
• Build a competent, motivated and empowered team with a strong zero-harm culture.

Purpose of the role

The Engineering Manager is a 2.13.1 appointment in terms of the MHSA, providing technical and people leadership for mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, civil and capital control activities while maintaining engineering standards and reducing operational risk.

Requirements

• BEng in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
• Government Certificate of Competency: Mines and Works.
• Management Development Programme is advantageous.
• Psychometric assessment and certificate of fitness.
• Professional body membership, such as SACEA or ECSA, is advantageous.
• 5 years' relevant management experience in a mining or production environment, with at least 5 years' operational experience.
• Maintenance or asset management experience in plants, opencast and underground mining is advantageous.

Skills and competencies

• Full computer literacy and proficiency in MS Office Suite, SAP and MS Projects.
• Sound verbal and written communication skills in English.
• Knowledge of maintenance practices, engineering design and principles, and mining and plant equipment.
• Project management, data analysis, report-writing, interpersonal, planning and problem-solving skills.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure asset management plans are in place for critical fixed plant and equipment.
• Translate company strategy into annual technical and people plans.
• Manage engineering budgets, CAPEX, maintenance costs, forecasts and spares provision.
• Drive engineering discipline, reliability, zero breakdown culture and contractor management.
• Ensure compliance with the MPRDA, MHSA, OHSA, SHEQ legislation, company policies and work-area risk controls.
